The donations are used to enroll local children in the sailing program for an entire year. These are kids who have shown keen interest in sailing, but without this support would not have been able to afford sailing lessons. One of the kids started in 2009 and is still in the program. He is advancing rapidly and currently sailing in a RS Vision. The ultimate goal is to keep supporting these local children over the years and to find extra funding to add more kids to the program every season.
The organization of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club would like to thank the participants of the 2012 event for their donations.
Regatta Director Michele Korteweg explains:
“Four local children were added to the Youth Sailing Program this year with the support of our participants. It is wonderful to see the gratefulness of these kids and we want to share this with the participants. For some this is a dream come true, something they’ve been wanting for years. We are thrilled to see that the 17 participants that already entered the 2013 Regatta have made donations to the Youth Sailing Program, which looks very promising for the amount of kids we will be able to sponsor for next year.”
The St. Maarten Marine Trades Association is also a big supporter of this initiative and sponsors 5 local children taking part in the Youth Sailing Program of the Sint Maarten Yacht Club.
For over three decades, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has showcased the top boats and sailing - and has become equally famous for its world-class slate of parties and musical entertainment—in the Caribbean. Now recognized by sailors around the planet as one of the sailing world’s best regattas, each year the event lives up to its worthy motto: Serious Fun.
