Simpson Bay, the 14th Annual Regatta Art Competition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta was successfully concluded with a prize giving ceremony, hosted by Elektra, on Sunday the 10th of February at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. Over 150 creations were entered in this competition by children from many of the St. Maarten schools. Judges selected winners in the different age categories, ranging from 4-18 years old. After the prize giving the children had the opportunity to go out on the water in a sail boat, to enjoy their first sailing experience with the Sint Maarten Youth Sailing instructors.
The Regatta Art Competition has become a regular project of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta with the goal to get the children involved in the event and to educate them about the Regatta and sailing. Many schools and children are competing for amazing prizes by making creations in the theme of the Regatta, Sailing and St. Maarten. Every year it seems as if the kids on St. Maarten are getting keener in building, painting and drawing, showing some real creativity.
This year challenging assignments were added for students attending secondary schools, which resulted in some new fabulous, artistic artworks, like paintings.
A jury panel, consisting of Laura and Roland Richardson, Gary Brown, Petra Gilders and Delphaine Smith, had a hard time selecting the winners: ‘Having been part of the judging panel for the last five years, I can honestly say that this year the level of art and the prize giving participation was at its highest. Well done to all the budding artists and teachers for your enthusiasm for this great competition - and the sponsors for the truly wonderful prizes! Also to Anne Roos of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta office for the superb organization of the event', said Petra Gilders. At the end of the day 36 winners were chosen, representing all age categories and the different assignments. In addition, some extra prizes were handed out, like the Teacher’s Choice Award, to award children for their effort, or extreme creativity.
The prizes for the Regatta Art Competition are sponsored by several local businesses. This year four new sponsors were added that donated some amazing prizes, like Winair, The Art Box Gallery, Keijzer and Carrousel. Zeynep Akyurt from SXM Montessori who made a beautiful diorama and Isaiah Haakmat from Learning Unlimited (LU) who created a wonderful Regatta painting, won 2 tickets from Winair to any destination.
All the winning children received a goody bag from The Art Box Gallery with handmade jewelry from the owner, Zdenka Kiric, and a Pineapple Pete t-shirt. In addition they received wonderful prizes consisting of fresh and tasty ice cream from Carrousel, trail rides at the Seaside Nature Park, a warm welcome at the Roland Richardson Gallery Museum, a family visit to the The Butterfly Farm, lunch at Pineapple Pete, Mp3 players and a printer from Keijzer, tickets to the St. Maarten Zoo, a snorkel tour with Aqua Mania, a Rhino Safari trip and bike, kayak-snorkel tours from TriSport. Handouts and posters were printed by Xerox and during the Prize Giving children could enjoy snacks and juices donated by Divico.
The organization of the Regatta Art Competition would like to thank all schools, children, sponsors, volunteers, a jury consisting of Laura and Roland Richardson, Gary Brown, Petra Gilders, Delphaine Smith, our fabulous host Elektra and the press who made this event a success.
