This event was founded by volunteers some 28 years ago when several people got together and decided to have a regatta. Today that small event has turned into one with over 250 competitors, and more than 120 volunteers. It is this group of people that keeps this regatta going, through 2 days of registration, four days of sailing and numerous parties. Without these volunteers the atmosphere surrounding the St.Maarten Heineken Regatta would be entirely different. People of different nationalities, from many different countries all come together to volunteer their time and energy. Ask any of the people wearing the regatta team shirts why they like it so much and you will receive many different reasons.

From the sheer pleasure of giving back to the island, to the excitement of being involved in something so large, all these volunteers have one thing in common, they do it because they love it. Some of our volunteers have been working this event for 15 years, some even longer. It is this type of dedication and loyalty that makes the regatta one of the “must do’s” on the Caribbean racing calendar. Participants come back year after year and are greeted by old friends who help with tasks such as registration, start boats, water taxi service, information booth and much more. The St.Maarten Heineken Regatta would like to thank the volunteers that worked so hard to make the 2007 regatta such a success and extend a warm welcome to those of you who would like to take part in the 28th edition; we will see you at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club in March of 2008 for some Serious Fun.
