CHIPPIE powered by UTS joins St.Maarten Heineken Regatta

SIMPSON BAY—the 27th
edition of the St.Maarten Heineken Regatta will feature an extra day of
racing. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Sint
Maarten Yacht Club yesterday. Organizers of the Caribbean’s largest
regatta also announced that CHIPPIE powered by UTS has been added to
the list of many businesses that sponsor the “Serious Fun” event.
The extra day of racing will be held Thursday March 1 and is intended
for Spinnaker Classes only. The day will consist of 2 to 3 windward -
leeward races. The traditional three-day race schedule will set sail
starting Friday March 2 and continue
through to Sunday March 4. “We want to cater more to the performance
boats,” said Robbie Ferron, Chairman of the Regatta Steering Committee.
Ferron likened the high performance racers to the fashion industries
top designers. They create and set trends. He explained that by
attracting top racers to St.Maarten the regatta would establish the
sailing trends for the Caribbean. “We’ve been the biggest regatta in
the Caribbean for six years now,” Ferron noted. “We have no real
interest in getting bigger. If it happens fine, but we always strive to
get better.” The extra day of sailing has been added to the weekend
schedule a day before the traditional racing starts. “Most of the boats
are already here on Thursday,” said Ferron. The additional racing will
be scored separately from the rest of the regatta and will feature its
own trophy. The race will sailed for the Commodores Cup. However,
Ferron implied the name could change if another sponsor stepped
forward.
Ferron
called the addition of CHIPPIE and UTS as sponsors of the regatta a
perfect match. He said both groups are focused, have a vision for the
future and an innovative plan to get better. “We are pleased to be
involved in the promotion of St.Maarten and to be associated with the
St.Maarten Heineken Regatta and its many sponsors,” said Glenn Carty of
UTS. “We are particularly proud to be the official mobile phone service
provider.” Several of the regatta sponsors, including John Leone, the
managing director of Heineken St.Maarten were on hand at the press
conference to officially welcome CHIPPIE.
