The Beach Clean-Up will take place on Saturday January 27th from 9 AM till 12 PM at Kim Sha Beach. Together with local youth, the Regatta Foundation will start the morning with cleaning Kim Sha Beach which has been allocated as a temporary activity area for cruise ship tourists. The morning will be closed off with sports activities.
The Beach Clean-Up will be a fun morning, starting with a 30-minute competition where teams need to collect the most garbage as possible. After the clean-up, a quiz will be held by the St. Maarten Nature Foundation about the effects of pollution on marine life and the environment. The morning will be closed off with all sorts of sports activities organized by LAB Sports Academy.
Maxim van den Pol, organizer of the Beach Clean-Up is excited to see the amount of garbage being collected. “After the major hurricane in September, this annual event is more important than ever. It’s not only educating the kids about the importance of their surroundings, but the Beach Clean-Up is also a great way to make friends and get your community service hours. And don’t forget the many prizes that can be won! There are prizes available for the best cleaners, and the winners of the quiz and the sports activities.”
This year’s Beach Clean-Up will be provided by LAB Sports Academy, the St. Maarten Nature Foundation, Trisport, Funtopia, the Scubashop, Intertoys, Ocean Explorers, Random Wind and Fiji Water.
Also on the calendar for January is the 19th Annual Regatta Art Competition. With the deadline of February 2nd approaching rapidly, the children have less than a month to show how creative they are. Contestants are divided in five age groups and each group has three different assignments to choose from. After the assignments are handed in at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club or at one of the two Van Dorp locations, a team of artists will judge all the artworks. First, second and third prize winners in each group will be rewarded with prizes sponsored by local businesses. Assignment packages are now available at all schools on the Dutch side, at both Van Dorp locations and at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. They can also be sent digitally if desired.
Please note the following dates:
